...

I wasn't going to write today - that is, last night. I was suddenly struck though, with the utter evil of abortion [even what I've perceived of it comes nothing close to the depth of it] and of how weak and feeble those of us who know the truth are in combatting it.

Abortion is the greatest injustice against humanity the world has ever known.
It is greater than all the wars that have been fought.
It is destroying and damaging more people than slavery does. [And by the way, there are more slaves now, in 2010, than there ever were when slavery was abolished].

It is World War III, yet it is profoundly worse than any other war history has known. The truth is that wars are usually fought when two sides are of nearly equal strengths; abortion involves the systematic, silent extermination of billions of people who can not fight back; the only people who can fight for them too often whisper the truth instead of screaming it.

I realised tonight a tiny portion of the huge responsibility I have under God to speak against this agony of abortion. I'm the President of a local pro-life club, and as is the case with too many things I commit to, I easily fall into the belief that this is just a worthy cause.
When I remember that there are fifty babies dying every day, I have to slowly get out of my secure feelings about abortion as just a cause.
Because people, our brothers and sisters, are dying. We know the truth, and we must speak up.

Lyd, it is good that God has given you this burden in your heart- and that you are doing something about it.

i think we must keep much in prayer about such a work, we being mortals prone to many obstacles. And at the heart of the action, may all your motivations and convictions stay strongly rooted in your faith-

Recently my family read a portion from this large tome about reformed church history. It's a really old set of books that comes in two huge volumes, all thickness and tiny type, and over a few years we've finally reached the part where Luther was being threatened yet again by a gathering of princes and whatnot.
It all seemed so much so against the cause, that he was at risk of taking the burden on his shoulders.

But somehow, through a sight of Nature, he realized that being in God's hands meant that the burden of actual outcomes- 'the cause'- could be left there.

It is a great blessing to have conviction and compassion. And i'm totally for your effort in spreading awareness, i think it's a perfectly appropriate way of responding in your situation.

Abortion is an especially horrible tragedy, for that it's taken as part of 'normal', acceptable life. The crime, as in all great crimes against humanity, is denied and made light of.

But i hope you will not let it trouble your peace with God, for it's a wicked world when you think of all the evil past, present, and future.
There is no hope in the world, we can only do our part in our little corners, and trust God to use it as He will. Whomever God moves through your ministry, will be a precious life saved and turned aside from it.
Will be keeping you and the group in prayer.

We've some serious issues over here too, but with many complexities about any kind of speaking out.
Someone just got arrested for writing a book about something....well i can't really say it either...

Thanks Lyd for wording what needs to be spoken by so many more people today. So many people at least seem to be to silent on this issue and too scared to speak up. Maybe I should take a step back and not be to judgmental by expecting non-christians to speak up and be more ready to speak up myself. Not only on this topic but on other topics as well. As goes for other but equally ethical topics I am afraid to admit sometimes I've preferred to stay in my comfort zone and just walk away from conversations (e.g. at TAFE) instead of silencing others (at least for a while) by speaking up and then walking away. It's really encouraging to read what someone else says when they feel the same way as me. Thanks.

Hi Lyd
I too have a God-given conviction to speak up about abortion. If you get to read this, please can you give me some tips as to what I can do?
I've seen the t-shirts, and put a bumper sticker on my facebook page. I'm also very very busy! Apart from commenting on your posts, and Andy's website, I don't know what else I can do.
Yours hopefully
Anne
ps: your Mum has my email address

Hi Anne!

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Thanks for your comment - it's awesome to hear from you! :)

It's a difficult question. I know it's hard to know what kinds of activities it would be most profitable to get involved in - some things you can do are well-intentioned but of little use.

Tee-shirts are a great way to get the word out there, and are fairly cheap: http://www.abort73.com/gear/shirts
They even sell kid's ones if you want to get your kids out there with the message too!

Once you wear a tee-shirt, you own the issue a lot more, and you get more comments [hopefully!].

Here's a link to the main pro-life group in the UK - you may have heard of them?
http://abort67.co.uk/
Their site doesn't have much information [at all] on what you can do to take action, but it does have resources and information that would be useful.

What Andy and I did was to set up pro-life groups; you may not have time to do something like that. But what you can do is:
1. Talk to people. Christians, non-christians. Just tell them things like - there were 202,158 abortions committed in England & Wales in 2008. People need to be shocked by the situation. Here's a good page: http://abort67.co.uk/facts/uk-abortion-statistics.html

2. Wear prolife tees..

3. With other like-minded pro-life people, run a stall 1-2 times a year at an agricultural & pastoral show [do you have them in the UK?] Or some other kind of show where you can get away with having a table. You can get resources like pamphlets and photos from Abort 67, and hand them out, as well as explaining to people the nature of abortion, and how life is the best option..

4. Have regular prayer meetings to pray about the issue - and for the other pro-lifers around the world working on this.

Hope I didn't overload you! Just a few ideas :)

- Lydie
